e-verify update

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has announced that effective Monday, June 15, 2015 North Dakota will become the sixth state to participate in the Records and Information from DMV’s for E-Verify (RIDE) program.  RIDE is an ongoing E-Verify initiative that connects E-Verify with state departments of motor vehicles (DMVs) and state public safety offices.  RIDE allows E-Verify to validate the authenticity of driver’s licenses and state identification cards presented by employees for Form I-9 purposes.  A major objective for RIDE is to reduce document fraud while boosting the accuracy of E-Verify employment eligibility verification.  North Dakota joins Mississippi, Florida, Idaho, Iowa, and Nebraska in the RIDE initiative.

In other I-9 news, Temporary Protected Status (TPS) remains a hot topic.  Most recently, Jeh Johnson (Secretary of Homeland Security) announced his decision to designate Nepal for TPS for 18 months based on the conditions resulting from the April 2015 earthquake.  The TPS designation for Nepal is effective June 24, 2015 through December 24, 2016 with registration from June 24, 2015 until December 21, 2015.  This follows the recent extension of TPS for eligible nationals of Somalia for an additional 18 months, effective September 18, 2015 through March 17, 2017.  Current TPS Somalia beneficiaries must re-register during the 60-day re-registration period that runs from June 1, 2015 through July 31, 2015.
